12-Man Roster Set for World Cup
Historic Milestone for African Nation
MANILA, Philippines — South Sudan has secured its spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the top-ranked African team to qualify for the first time in history. The historic achievement was announced following the release of the final rankings for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where South Sudan emerged as the top African nation.
Led by two-time NBA All-Star and head coach Luol Deng, South Sudan has unveiled a 12-man roster for the upcoming World Cup. The squad includes several standout players, including Phoenix forward Bol Bol, the son of Sudanese basketball legend Manute Bol. However, Bol will not be joining the team for the World Cup.
South Sudan's qualification for the Olympics is a testament to the growing strength of basketball in Africa. The team's success is also a source of inspiration for young athletes across the continent. South Sudan will make its Olympic debut in men's basketball on July 28, 2024.
