Hungary's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2024

Introduction

Hungary will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) for the second time from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2024. This is the final presidency in the twelfth trio of Council Presidencies, which began on 1 July 2022.

Priorities and Focus Areas

Hungary's presidency programme outlines the following seven thematic priority areas for its term:

  • Stronger, more resilient, and more competitive EU economy
  • A focus on citizens' security and promoting the rule of law
  • Addressing the challenges of migration and asylum
  • Digital transformation and innovation
  • The European Green Deal and sustainable development
  • Enhancing the EU's role in the world
  • The future of Europe and the EU's strategic priorities

Hungary's Presidency Objectives

During its presidency, Hungary aims to:

  • Advance the EU's priorities by building consensus among member states
  • Represent the EU's interests on the international stage
  • Provide leadership and direction for the EU's future development
  • Strengthen cooperation and solidarity among member states
