Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that is formed when fuels such as gas, wood, or propane burn incompletely. It is a byproduct of combustion and can be found in the exhaust of cars, generators, and other combustion-powered engines.
How Carbon Monoxide Affects the Body
Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood, preventing it from carrying oxygen to the body's tissues and organs. This can lead to hypoxia, a condition in which the body does not have enough oxygen, and can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
- Death
Sources of Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide can be produced by a variety of sources, including:
- Cars and other combustion-powered vehicles
- Generators
- Fireplaces
- Gas stoves
- Propane heaters
Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
There are a number of things you can do to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, including:
- Install and maintain a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
- Never run a generator inside your home or garage.
- Never burn charcoal or wood inside your home.
- Have your chimney and gas appliances inspected and cleaned regularly.
- Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and seek medical attention if you experience them.
